Great News: President Obama Welcome Yankees to White House
Something significant happened in the White House yesterday, April 26th, 2010.
It had been nine years since the Yankees were last invited to visit the president at home. Only in politics and the Bronx is that a long, long time.
President Obama welcomed the Yankees to the White House on Monday in a ceremony in the East Room, saying that "for the millions of Yankees fans in New York and around the world who bleed blue, nothing beats that Yankee tradition" - a tradition, he joked, that historically does not abide such droughts between championships.
For the Yankees' core four, the visit was their fifth to the White House, and Obama the third president to honor them for winning the World Series. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada all met President Clinton in 1997, 1999 and 2000, and President George W. Bush in 2001.
Following Obama's remarks, Girardi presented him with a No. 27 Yankee jersey signed by all members of the team, and Obama shook hands with the players. He told CC Sabathia that "I watched your no-hitter," a near no-hitter against Tampa Bay two weeks ago.
Obama then posed for pictures with the team and the World Series trophy. One member of the Yankees organization suggested aloud that it might be the White Sox's First Fan's last chance to hold the trophy.
"And you wonder why the other teams don't root for you," Obama said with a smile.
It's a great news that Yankees back where they belong, and In honor of the special festivities on April 26th, Obama has declared it: National Steroid Awareness Day!
