White Sox Aisle
Cubs fans, do you think Wrigley Field will ever have to be rebuilt?
A few years ago, I heard that debris was falling from the upper deck and that the Cubs installed nets to protect the fans from getting hit in the head. What do you think of my idea?
-Cubs to share US Cellular Field with White Sox for at least 2 seasons (The Yankees shared Shea with the Mets in 1974-75)
-Knock down entire grandstand and leave the Bleacher area the way it already is.
-Build an entirely new grandstand with wider aisles, wider concourses, more concessions, restaurants, and restrooms
There's only 2 problems with your argument for a new ballpark in the present location at Clark and addison.
The first issue has already been brought up - the issue of space. If ytou are from Chicago, and even if you aren't , you have probably seen pictures of the Old Comiskey alongside the new ballpark. The 2 parks are similiar in seating capacity, but the new park takes up a lot more room because of the design features you are talking about - wider concourses, etc. Wrigley Field as it exists now is sort of shoehorned into the neighborhood. If you look at the way the park is laid out, there is really very little room to make it any bigger in terms of it's footprint. The area behind home plate is already pretty close to the intersection of Clark and Addison, and the side of the ballpark down the rightfield line comes pretty close to Addison as well. if you were to leave the bleachers alone, you would have to actually move the streets to accomodate any expansion. And that still wouldn't solve one of the bigger issues that the ballpark has in not having enough parking.
The only way a new ballpark would fit in that space is if it were pretty much a duplicate of Wrigley as it already exists. And if all you are going to do is simply copy the old ballpark, there realy is no point.
I am a die hard Cubs fan who first went to Wrigley in 1969, and while i certainly have some great memories of the ballpark, it has unfortunately become completely inadequate. Don't get me wrong, when I'm actually in my seat watching the game, I love the place. But , getting there is a pain (even though I take public transportation, I have to drive to the El in Rosemont, go all the way downtown, transfer to the Red Line - not bad on the way there - but you can wait a long time to get on the El going home), the fact that all of the concessions are below the stands rather then behind them (like US Cellular for example) means that you miss an ining or so, and the concession stands, restrooms and other areas are crowded and sometimes difficult to navigate because of the narrow corridors.
The only real solution is for the Cubs to build a new ballpark
elsewhere. And because of the fact that a large amount of land would be needed to truly make it a state of the art ballpark, with enough parking so that you could actually park near it, means that it will probably have to be built in the North or Northwest Suburbs.
The interesting side effect to this will be what happens to the neighborhood should the Cubs leave. And after seeing them have to fight with the neighbors to get night games, hearing the complaints from people about how having the ballpark effects the quality of their life ( an argument that to me is only valid if the person lived there before the park was built in 1914 - doubt it applies to any of them). Be fun to watch all of those who complained all these years see their property values drop, see about half of the bars and restaurants close, and see their neighborhood go from being a fairly vibrant area to being just another neighborhood.
So while I will miss the old palce when the time comes, I also realize that buildings sometimes simply lose their usefullness. And to hang on to a building (or any other man made thing) once it has outlived that usefullness is not only overly sentimental, it really doesn't make economic sense either.
