Wicked is a Tony award-winning American musical produced by Universal Pictures and is based on the novel - Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory Maguire. The Wicked is about the life of two witches; intelligent, fiery but misunderstood and victimized - Elphaba and the beautiful and ambitious – Glinda, who eventually become the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the South respectively. The story talks about the friendship of Glinda, the Good and Elphaba, the Witch with the green skin. They are shunned by society and how their destinies lead them on different paths to become what they are.
Directed by Joe Mantello, the story divulges deep into the relationship of the two witches, exploring their distinct personalities, different and often opposing viewpoints, fight over the same love interest and eventually Glinda’s fall from grace! The story ends with a moral lesson – about understanding about identifying and appreciating distinctiveness in personalities of people.
The music of The Wicket first opened on Broadway on October 30, 2003 and has been created by Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz. The music of the play is thematic – one that immediately touches the heart and enters the soul.
