Philadelphia Phillies Tickets - Phillies' Three Pitchers To Dl
The Philadelphia Phillies still have the most talented roster in the National League, but they will be losing three important pieces of their team to the disabled list just before the season gets under way. Starter Joe Blanton and relievers Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero were all placed on the DL for various injuries, which will significantly test the depth of the Phillies heading into a season filled with championship expectations.
After again reaching the World Series in 2009, the Phillies were whispered to have one of the best teams the National League has seen in a long time, and for good reason. Not only do they boast the most talented lineup in the NL, if not the league, they also added stud pitcher Roy Halladay to the top of their rotation. If they could make it to the World Series with Cole Hamels having a down year and Brad Lidge nearly imploding on a nightly basis in 2009, certainly the Phillies would be the favorite to return to the Fall Classic again in 2010.
But returning to the Series is never that easy, as the Phillies are likely to find out this season. Though Joe Blanton is only their third or fourth starter, he is still a valuable asset to their rotation that will put a significant amount of pressure on the rest of the pitching staff. Blanton has pitched in more than 195 innings for each of the last two seasons, helping to rest the Phillies' bullpen in the process. This will bump up 47-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer to the fourth spot in their rotation and push J.A. Happ to the third spot, which is less than ideal for a team that is expected to run away with the NL East.
The loss of Lidge and Romero may hurt even more, however, as Romero is a main part of their middle relief and Lidge is still a viable closer, even after a down year in 2009. It's possible that the Phillies will get both Lidge and Romero back around April 10th, as their 15-day DL stints are retroactive to March 26th, but both are coming off minor elbow surgeries, making their health unclear for the 2010 season. Even if they do come back in mid-April, which is far from certain, it will likely take a while for them to get back into game shape and be effective in the late innings. With Blanton out and two key guys missing from the bullpen to start the season, the Phillies' pitching staff will certainly be stretched.
It certainly is no time to panic for the Phillies, however, as they simply have too much talent to be extraordinarily worried. With Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard in their lineup, the Phillies will be able to compete with anybody in the league no matter who is pitching behind them and Halladay is a game changer at the top of their rotation. Even with Tim Lincecum winning the last two NL Cy Young awards, Halladay is a trendy pick to win this year's Cy Young, which should suggest the level of expectations surrounding his season. Even with three pitchers now on the DL, <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/philadelphia-phillies-tickets/">Philadelphia Phillies tickets</a> are still as prominent as ever due to the overall strength of the club. However, if Blanton, Lidge and Romero can't return swiftly from the DL, the race in the NL East may just get tighter than previously anticipated.
