The Lion King Musical
Premiered for the very first time in July 1997, at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis, MN, the Lion King Musical went on to bag six Tony awards straight in 1998. The production team consisted of Director Julie Taymor, Choreographer Garth Fagan, Set Designer – a native Zimbabwean – Richard Hudson, Puppet Expert Michael Curry, Lyricist Tim Rice and Musicians Elton John, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer. Together, they managed to create history with this production.
Music and Sets
This memorable score includes the Oscar-winning composition of Elton John and Tim Rice – "Can You Feel The Love Tonight". The Lion King Musical has received some dazzling reviews for its music. The most dramatic scene in The Lion King, the stampede, in which Scar kills his brother Mufasa, was the most difficult to enact on the stage. Set Designer Richard Hudson created the illusion of thousands of wild beasts, rushing straight at Simba – and at the audience – with the help of a canvas scroll and a number of large rollers. The effect on the audience is simply electrifying!
