Royals Lose Gordon To Start Year
The Kansas City Royals can't afford to lose a bat, not when they scored the second-fewest runs in the American League last year. But the injury bug seems to be striking many teams in spring camps and the Royals are no exception, as they have lost third baseman Alex Gordon for up to a month with a broken thumb. Gordon slid head first into second base on a steal attempt during a recent spring game and came up with the tip of his thumb broken. He still could be ready by opening day, but since he was hurt so early in spring training it would seem likely he would need some sort of extended camp even if the thumb is healed, so he probably won't be in the opening day lineup.
"It's unfortunate because it didn't have to happen," manager Trey Hillman said. "It's a well-documented fact that more injuries on the base paths happen from sliding headfirst than any other way. … Unfortunately, we've got another example of it."
Gordon, who said he would now stop sliding headfirst, is a former top pick who has been projected at the heir apparent to George Brett at third base but has yet to live up to expectations. Last year, he missed a large chunk of the season because of hip surgery. He struggled after returning in July and eventually spent three weeks in the minor leagues. He played only 49 games for the Royals and batted just .232 with six homers and 22 RBIs.
That means Alberto Callaspo, a switch hitter who batted .300 last season but lost his job at second base because newcomer Chris Getz has greater defensive skills, will likely be the starting third baseman most of camp, with Josh Fields, who came over with Getz from the White Sox in the trade for Mark Teahen, also getting some work at third.
