Latest Jack Park Osu Football Book Targets Visual Impression

Together with Whitman Publishing, Park has put together a veritablescrapbook with his The Ohio State University Football Vault: TheHistory of the Buckeyes.
"Whitman sent me samples from some similar books from otherschools and I was amazed with the visual," Park said."What they said they wanted to do, with some help from me, wasto help identify some photos that maybe hadn't been used before inother books."
What resulted in the process was a book full of photos, some evenPark hadn't seen before, and memorabilia from copies of oldprograms, ticket stubs and even pennants, all compiled either onthe pages of the book or in envelopes attached to those pages.
"I thought it was a pretty neat idea," Park said. "Iparticularly liked the hand-written letter from President (Gerald)Ford to Woody Hayes.
"I was happy that Jim Tressel accepted our invitation to writethe forward and Archie Griffin agreed to write the afterward. Ithink those two sections at the beginning and end really completethe book."
Color was added to some older photos, giving the reader aperspective of what Chic Harley might have looked like in a scarletjersey, as opposed to the black and white visages fans of theschool have seen in the past.
A favorite of Park's was a picture of an elderly Harley, OSU'sfirst All-American, speaking to Heisman Trophy winner Howard"Hopalong" Cassady.
"I had never seen that one before," Park admitted."The picture on the cover of the stadium from the South endzone is great.
"There's one of a ticket from the Nov. 12, 1949 game withIllinois. That was a very prominent game, and the color of thetickets is really good."There's one of the Pitt Panther with a police dog that we hadapparently (adopted) as a mascot for several years, there's apicture of Don Scott in his fighter outfit -- he was such a greatquarterback and he lost his life in a training mission in 1942 --and there's a picture of the team with Bing Crosby."
The inserted items have an authenticity about them that would behard to duplicate. The publishers took actual artifacts from as farback as 1892, copied them and included them in the book.
"They spent numerous hours in the archives at OhioState," Park explained. "A couple of technical or graphicpeople were there. They get into something like that and they'renot sure what they're looking for until they see it.
"The equipment they used and their scanning ability is great.I don't know how it could have been better. That's what impressedme. When they reproduced all the old tickets and the programcolors, those look so authentic. I have a lot of those from when Istarted following the school and those covers look like they justcame off the press."Park has written several books about OSU, including The OfficialOhio State Football Encyclopedia (first published in 2001), butsaid this effort is unique.
"This is an entirely different type of publication," hesaid. "This is more of an enjoyable fun type of read. It's notquite so deep. It's much more for the eye with all the pictures andthe graphics and memorabilia.
"This comes in a box or vault. It's a different kind offootball publication that's come out about Ohio State football. Ithink it's something that will be more of a high-level coffee tablebook. I think because of that, it will be a big gift item."
