Norah Jones took the plunge into the music industry in 2002 with her debut album Come Away with Me, emerging on the scene as an innocently sweet cabaret crooner. Now, more than five years after her initial release, Jones has switched up her usual song-and-dance fashion. The once-candy coated songstress still floats like a butterfly, but with her most recent full-length album The Fall, her music now also stings harder than a bee.
Evolving from a sunshiny jazz-induced lounge singer to a moody and more indie-flavored vocalist, Norah Jones has morphed into a more experienced artist while still retaining her signature easygoing musical style. Jones' change in music is captured in her 2009 album The Fall, a deeply personal release directly following her split from longtime bass player boyfriend Lee Alexander. The Fall is a significant shift in temperament from her former releases – Come Away with Me as well as 2004's Feels Like Home and 2007's Not Too Late – and that's not all that's changed about the enchanting Norah Jones.
The ravishing singer/songwriter has recently embarked upon a string of tour dates in support of The Fall, shocking audiences when she appears onstage with a short bob of brown hair – a significant departure from her long-locked bohemian look of old. Jones recently played a gig in New York at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, and she showcased both her blissful tunes like "Sunshine" and "Come Away with Me" as well as newer sultry and more uneasy hits like "Chasing Pirates" and "Tell Your Mama," the latter of which stating the lyrics: "'Cause I've been waiting/ For your time/ And I've been missing/ Out on mine/ So tell your father that I said so long/ And thanks for raising you so damn wrong."
Norah Jones can tone down her smoky voice for cherubic ballads or heat things up for more yearning numbers, and this is only part of her mass appeal. The young and very gifted musician has been a fixture on the Greenwich Village folk/jazz music scene since the late 1990s, and as the daughter of sitar musician Ravi Shankar this jazzy darling just plain has musical talent in her blood. Jones grew up with her mother in Texas and showed her penchant for jazz music at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, winning several jazz accolades while attending the school.
In the late '90s, Jones dropped out of the University of North Texas once she discovered the burgeoning folk scene in Greenwich Village, and she immediately started working the coffeehouse circuit as a popular contemporary jazz/folk singer. Jones was discovered by Blue Note while performing with the band Wax Poetic, and she soon went to work on a solo album, emerging in 2002 with the ever-popular Come Away with Me. The album was a smash hit on the mainstream music scene, going multi-platinum and earning Jones eight Grammy Awards along the way.
Successive album releases Feels Like Home (2004) and Not Too Late (2007) both followed suit and reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and Jones' most recent album The Fall has also seen the top of the music charts, as well, spawning a nationwide tour shortly thereafter.
