Little Rock

The Desegregation of Little Rock (the Beginning)
In the literature and in the press there are a lot of examples of the religious tolerance and antagonistic attitude to the other religion or to the person of the other race. So in one of the American newspapers there is a story of Elizabeth Eckward, who was one of the students of the Little Rock. It was in 1957 when nine black students crushed Little Rock, Arkansas’s Central High School. The president Dwight Eisenhower tried to do his best to eliminate the disorder and panic in the school. He called the members of federal police department, trying to ensure the order in the school and the safety of the students.
Elizabeth Eckward was the witness of that event. She told how she was trying to enter the school in the day of this awful event. Here is the beginning of her story: “I was standing in the corner, trying to enter the school and pass through the crowd of the policemen around the building of the school. There were a lot of people, students and guard. Everyone was in the mess, because it was the most unpredictable event in the school. I saw one of the guards crossing the street. He gave me the sign to move to another side of the street and to move down. In was the moment of silence, so that I could hear the noise of my steps. Then someone cried: “Get ready! She comes! “I moved away and then noticed this crowd following me. Everybody was calling my name. I did not know, but I was not afraid as I knew the guard was near to protect me. The only way out was to pass the block of the guards and enter the school…” Reading this episode, one can only imagine the inner state of this girl, who appeared in that situation.
