4X4 News: Five Year Old Drives Mum Up The Wall
It's a known fact that children can at times drive their parents up the wall, but a five year old boy from Chichester, West Sussex, literally drove his mums 4x4 into a wall - fortunately managing to escape without serious injury. Thomas Chatfield "could barely see over the dashboard or reach the pedals of the automatic Mitsubishi Shogun", according to Sky News, but that didn't stop him trundling along at 10mph along a duel carriageway section of the A27 until finally crashing into a wall.
The Telegraph website has reported that "the vehicle was spotted by surprised motorists who could only see the top of the child's head". Traffic officers described the incident as "remarkable" and said the boy and other drivers were lucky to escape unscathed – the same however cannot be said for the numerous vehicles that the Shogun clipped along the way.
Some learner drivers at the age of 17 struggle to get to grips with the basics of driving, and women aren't very well known for their reversing skills, but this five year old managed to switch the Mitsubishi engine on and reverse off his mums drive before embarking on a four-mile joyride around the Cheshire area.
Despite being too short to reach the pedals, a Sussex Police spokesperson said "we believe that the car travelled just over four miles from his home address, with several witnesses revealing that the 4x4 had been driven at slow speeds, but erratically – what can you expect from a child with no driving experience?
Numerous passersby including other motorists tried to stop the boy as he aimlessly drove by, but witnesses reported that "every time it stopped it would then accelerate again", preventing anyone getting close enough to help. Sussex Police said "for a five-year old he had actually driven quite well" Could the residents of Chichester, West Sussex been witness to the next Lewis Hamilton?
