Although you wouldn’t know it from the national headlines, these two no-name QBs were actually pretty good. The combined for 24 passing touchdowns and had the 6th highest yards per pass attempt average (6.8) in 2007. The Texans’ first round pick will help the passing game get even better. Houston used their 26th overall selection to grab an offensive lineman from Virginia Tech, one Duane Brown. The Texans will use Brown mainly as a pass blocker—something that they decided they needed after the season was over. Brown used to be a tight end at one pointing his career, so he’s a quick outside tackle who can get in front of linebackers coming in on the blitz. Look for him to come in immediately, especially for third and long situations. As you know, Ron Dayne was the focus of the running game, and he fared well as a fantasy player- gaining 773 yards over the course of the year, and picking up 6 TDs. Brown won’t have the power to help push Ron along, though. Also of note- the Texans picked Steve Slaton in the third round. Most think that Slaton is too flimsy and small to get a regular role in Texas, but you never know. He proved to be a nice assert at West Virginia.
Defensively, the Houston Texans improved by adding cornerback Antwaun Molden, their second pick, which came in the 3rd round. Since he played for Eastern Kentucky, you probably didn’t get to see much of Molden. However, the Texans think they can “mold him” into a nice addition to the secondary, which ought to give them another option at an area where they were a little weak last season.
