Autographs From Buffalo Bill
Autographs from Buffalo Bill are among the most treasured personalities of the Old West. Buffalo Bill was a terrific showman and he readily signed programs and photos to promote himself and his Wild West Show. Organized in 1883, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show toured the United States and Europe for over 30 years.
The success of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show demonstrated his ability as a businessman and entertainer. Extravagantly staged battles between cowboys and Indians thrilled audiences. The Wild West Show also featured Annie Oakley who attracted millions of people to witness her amazing sharp shooting. In 1887, Buffalo Bill performed to packed crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Among the most readily available autographs identified with Buffalo Bill is his marvelous double signature: "W.F. Cody/"Buffalo Bill". He commonly wrote his eponymous name "Buffalo Bill" with quotation marks. Sometimes Buffalo Bill would add: "True to Friend and Foe." The combination of double signatures and his oft-used quote is a wonderful autograph presentation.
Letters written by Buffalo Bill are desirable mementoes. Buffalo Bill typically signed his name as "W.F. Cody" on autographed letters to business associates. He signed "Will" on autographed letters to close family members and often signed as the name "Cody" to coworkers of his Wild West Show. On legal documents that include checks, promissory notes, and contracts, Buffalo Bill signed his name "William F. Cody."
Photographs signed by photographs are sometimes seen on the autograph marketplace. Many Buffalo Bill cabinet photographs are of impressive image quality. One of the most impressive photographs shows him with legendary Indian Chief Sitting Bull. Quality photographs signed by Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull are among the most expensive autographs in the field of autographs of the Old West.
Of particular interest to collectors of Old West memorabilia are autographs by Buffalo Bill and his business partner Gordon W. "Pawnee Bill" Lillie on legal documents. In 1883, Buffalo Bill hired Pawnee Bill as an interpreter and supervisor of the Indians in his Wild West Show. Lillie started his own show in 1888, but eventually joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1908. Quality reproductions of legal documents that are signed by Buffalo Bill, Pawnee Little, and Annie Oakley are available for creating marvelous displays.
Fortunately, generations of autograph aficionados have maintained autographs from Buffalo Bill in their collection. Their diligent care has provided a source of Buffalo Bill autographs for future generations of autograph collectors interested in the lore and legends of the Old West.
