The History And Accomplishments Of Los Angeles Angels
The history of the baseball team, Los Angeles Angels, is amazingly interesting for the fans of this historical sports franchise. The club was actually founded in Los Angeles in 1961 as the Los Angeles Angels and played their real home games at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field. The team then moved in 1962 to newly built Dodger Stadium, which the Angels referred to as Chavez Ravine, where they were tenants of the Los Angeles Dodgers through 1965.
The baseball team has gone through various name changes in their history, first changing to the California Angels in midseason of 1965 in recognition of their upcoming move to the newly constructed Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim the next year. Next is when The Walt Disney Company took control of the team in 1997, it enormously renovated the re-named Angel Stadium. In fact, the City of Anaheim contributed $30 million to the already $100 million renovation on the condition that both the stadium's name and the team's name contain the word "Anaheim". Well, Disney was truly hoping to capitalize on the proximity of the nearby Disneyland to improve the tourism in the area, and because of that the team became the Anaheim Angels.
Nevertheless, in 2005, the new owner Arte Moreno wanted to include "Los Angeles" in the team's name in order for the team to gain more popularity through the Los Angeles media. Although, legally the word "Anaheim" had to be part of the teams name. Thus, they became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Well, this was a huge controversy when first announced and was even upheld in court. The city dropped the suit in 2009 and now the baseball team is usually referred as the Angels.
Through the fortunes of the men that have played the game for the Angels, lots of memories have been created which makes the history of the Los Angeles Angels very beautiful. And one of these men who played and gave his best for the Angels is Baseball hall of famer Nolan Ryan. He pitched 4 n-hitters and ranked first in the team history with 139 wins and now is ranked second behind Steve Finley's 140. Nolan Ryan is the angels all time leader in complete games and twice won 20 games in a season for the Angels. Nolan's number 34 was retired by the Angels.
Between Disney's promotions, pending lawsuits over the team's name, a larger-than-life owner in Gene Autry, Bo Belinsky, Dean Chance, Alex Johnson, and Nolan Ryan with his no-hitters, the prodigious losses and the unbelievable comebacks, the one thing you surely cannot call the Angels is boring!
